I watched Avatar some time back, in East London, Stratford Picturehouse cinema. I must say I liked it a lot, I watched it in 3D and do wish it had much more 3D, but I think all 3D movies, that are intended to go to a TV screen, can't go too much out in the 3D aspect, as it would then not work when transfered to the normal screen.
One thing I noticed, after I thought about the movie, and what I could compare it to was that it had a lot on common with Distric 9
They both underlined racism and how in the end what counted was we all have feelings no matter how differant.
They all went on the basis of two differant species that walked on two legs, with arms and intelligence such as us and the use of their own language and culture.
Sure the Avatars were less yucky as the aliens in District 9, as in D9 they were simmilar to a bugmixed humanoid, and the flurecent blue humans weren't too bad, we do like blue neon lights on everything from christmas trees to tuned up cars, so I guess a blue humanoid alien wasn't too hard to look at.
The differance between the two was in District 9 it all occurs on earth where as Avatar is on another planet.
The aliens on District 9 are a tad more savage where as Avatar are more in touch with the earth, and that is where they diverge, as District 9 has a much bigger concentration on the racist underline, Avatar has that and also adds the unity to earth and all in it, the way we can all be linked to nature and so on.
I liked both of them, and I think they should both be watched, but maybe you should give a few months between, as I did, or you'll think they are too much the same in many aspects, and please don't go in there with the idea to compare it, as any movie when over compared looses its spark.
District 9 is mostly a South African scenary and accent movie.
Avatar mostly American also has the differant cultures that do exist on our planet and that were then mixed up to create the Avatar culture.
District 9 has a more rough look to it, as in a more dry, hard feel to it, more of a shock to the system.
Avatar is more on color and beauty, but also has some explosive content.
Now let me tell those that don't like imagining avatars making out slightly, don't go if you can't keep an open mind, cause there were some people that went and left halfway, as they couldn't bear with the avatars cuddling, please people, it's only a movie, and what did you expect? These type of movies are to be watched with an open mind, though you might hear some loud comments on those parts from people just wanting to make a mock of it....
I will say on both of them I was wide awake from start to finish, I liked them a lot. And think they are a good addition to any DVD collection.
If you watch it, please let me know if you see the same as me, that they are quite simmilar...
